A Collaborative Approach to Improving Water Quality

The project aims to address declining water quality in these priority catchments by addressing agricultural pressures, waste water discharge and citizen activities, through:

• Working with agri-businesses, including farmers, to encourage nutrient reduction
• Developing measures to reduce sediment from soil erosion and surface run off
• Addressing pressures from sewage infrastructure through capital investment in nature based solutions and in a new waste water treatment facility at Rossinver, Co. Leitrim
• Preventing / controlling adverse impacts of invasive & alien species and introduced diseases.
• Undertaking education and awareness activities for community led action, through local primary schools and for community associations in particular.

The Project Partners are detailed below and have pre-defined roles and responsibilities; Agri-food & Biosciences Institute (AFBI); Atlantic Technological University (ATU); Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN); Inland Fisheries Ireland; Ballinderry Rivers Trust; The Rivers Trust; Ulster University; Leitrim County Council; along with Associate Partners, the Garrison and Lough Melvin Anglers Association, and LAWPRO – Local Authorities Water Programme.
